#1 Hello, World.

As a preface to my post, I would like to say that it appears the Universe was conspiring against me on this assignment. First, as I said in class today, I was unable to complete my post yesterday afternoon because I spent my evening at the Daily Sun, and when I got home near 1 I couldn't post because Blogger's scheduled 30 minute outage turned into a 12 hour outage. I don't think the site actually came back until probably less than an hour before class, because it still wasn't up when I woke up. I was going to post immediately after class, but RedRover was misbehaving in my lecture hall. Long story short: I'm sorry for the lateness of the post. All that said, on to the post.

Greetings, all. I'm Will Fleming: I'm a junior Information Science major in the Engineering school. My professional interests are largely in intelligent systems, game design, and web development. I also haven't the slightest idea what I'm going to do after I graduate.

Outside of class, I work at CIT as an Applications Developer and I'm the Assitant Design Editor at the Daily Sun. Well technically, I'm not the Asst. Design Ed. at the Sun yet: I'm still in training. But I already held the position a year ago, I'm the only person running for the position right now, and the incumbent editors are out of the country, so for all intents and purposes I think I've got the job.

My free time is eaten up mostly by music, movies, books, and my personal web development projects. I'm a bona fide music junkie, and listen to mostly pop, rock, indie, folk, electronica, dance, and classical with occasional excursions into the realms of hip hop and jazz. My taste in books and graphic novels is somewhat less eclectic, but some of my favorites would be anything by Neil Gaiman or Alan Moore, the Sherlock Holmes stories, and Lord of the Rings. Although most of my development projects never reach a level of maturity where I take them public, I do keep a blog at http://jwock.org.

I think that's really all I have to say about myself. I guess I also drink too much coffee, and miss my pets when I'm in Ithaca. Yeah, that pretty much sums me up.

Bye now!

hi will,

there must be something in the air that's destroying technology for us. not only has my computer gone down, but so has my back up. sigh.

what are some things you're listening too (music is important to me too). me, listening to some electronic stuff, like isolee, analord, dj koze. in the fall i went through a rock phase, getting into broken social scene, black mountain, wolf parade (all canadian).

anyways, welcome, and i'm glad you're online with us now.

I think "awesome music" has become one of Canada's primary exports. Broken Social Scene and Wolf Parade are both fantastic, although I don't know Black Mountain: I guess I should look into them.

If you just got into BSS last fall, it seems possible to me that you've only heard their newsest self titled album: their first two albums, Feel Good Lost and You Forgot It In People are well worth a listen if you haven't heard them. I also highly recommend Stars, which are sort of an offshoot band from BSS. They're a sort of shimmery indie pop, if that appeals to you. If you like orchestral rock (Mogwai, Sigur Ros), then Godspeed! You Black Emperor (yes, that's the band's name) will probably appeal to you, and they're also Canadian. Actually Sigur Ros and Mogwai's latest albums are also fantastic. Well, Mogwai's newest, Mr. Beast isn't actually coming out until March, but it's really good. Other awesome Canadians: Arcade Fire and The New Pornographers.

For Electronica, I listen to dance and pop electronica hybrids more than I listen to house or techno. I know a little DJ Koze, but I don't know any Analord or Isolee. Isolee sounds right up my alley, so I might have to grab some of that stuff. I listen to a lot Daft Punk, The Postal Service, Frou Frou, Air, Ratatat, Cornelius, and Morcheeba. I'm also a fan of Dntel, The Silver Apples, and Ada.

Other bands ... um ... The Smashing Pumpkins, Belle & Sebastian, The Who, Wilco, My Bloody Valentine, The Clash, Ted Leo, Fruit Bats, Radiohead, Led Zeppelin, Grateful Dead, Mirah, Snow Patrol, Mclusky, The Beatles. That's not really an exhaustive list by any means, but it gives a decent indication of what I listen to.

As a tangentially related link: http://www.ifilm.com/ifilmdetail/2650242. It's a music video for a song called "The Lotion" by The Greenskeepers. If you are a fan of Silence of the Lambs or really bizarre and slightly disturbing things, you will probably find this amusing. If you think pop songs about fictional serial killers are in poor taste or if Silence of the Lambs really scared you, this is probably not something you want to watch.
